Default 1998 LR Discovery purchase question

Hello, I am seeking advice on whether this land rover is a good deal or not.

http://www.autotrader.com/fyc/vdp.js...ype=b&make=ROV

I have spoken to the owner and he has done all maintenance himself or dealer. He owns several land rovers and seemed very honest. The price kinda scares me though. just wondering what more experienced land rover owners think? This would be my first one and mostly just to and from work, with lite off roading. thanks

Fed

I'm no expert, but that seems pretty high. I just bought a 98 LSE with 109K miles, and not as good of condition, but not terrible for $1600. I would think you should be able to get one like that for around $5k.

Looks like a very nice Disco though.

yea, $5K no more sounds good to me too. ONLY if car fax checks out ok. Don't take his word for it on the maint. upkeep, its only hear/say. And if no lights are on dash (eng. light, etc.) everything must work perfect for that price. That $5k is before taxes too. good luck.

Seems high. I bought a 2001 SE7 w/102K in Nov 2007 for $7800.
It was a really clean car.
That was B4 the gas crunch and the prices dropped lower!
It has the CDL in the transfer case, but have not hooked up yet.
I would think $ 4-5K.

He did the top end gaskets a few months ago, the headliner is great, no sags. I dont know about the valve seals. He brought the price down to 7100. Still this feels pretty dang high. But KBB shows this...

I have also found a 2000 Series II for $6800. That one has 91K miles on it, not to sure on the maintenance though...

How mechaincal are you?
I would go with the DI, but that price is way to high, even at $7100, and the KBB at $6700 is with absoluty no flaws and the cargo nets in the back are all stretched out.
Keep looking, he wont sell it at that price so if you keep your eye on it the price will come down.
DII's are nice but they are more troublesome than DI's.
And there is a plus side to knowing all the maintence was done on time and done right.
Is he the second, third, 6th owner of this truck?

I am not very mechanical, but i can change the oil and do little things. I dont know if he is the original owner. I offered him 6500, but he came back with 7100. Here is the link for the 2000:
http://www.autotrader.com/fyc/vdp.js...ype=b&make=ROV

If maintenance on this was done correclt and timely would it be a beeter option? What would a good offer be for this one? Here is KBB:

I would hate to low ball offer someone, but 6800 seems a lot higher than what kbb shows. Would offering 5k be reasonable?

Well his is not the SD trim level, it is the SE which is the middle and then there is the HSE which is the top.
The SD does not come with sunroofs or leather seats.
He is missing a center cap on the drivers side rear wheel, not a huge deal but still something to think about, its a $15 part so why didnt he replace it? Does he not care?
With only one pic it makes me wonder what he is trying to hide, if anything.
You really need a pic of the dash with the engine running to see what warning lights, if any, are on.
If you want ot learn to be a shade trewe mechanic the DI would be a good one to learn on, very easy to work on and diagnois.
DII's are still fairly easy to work on but they have alot more things controlled by electronics and can be harder to diagnois.
What they are asking does not mean much if you are getting a loan for the truck as the bank will not finance any more than it is actually worth.
So they want $6800 for the DII, call yoru bank and see what the loan value is, I bet it is closer to $4500-5000 for a 36 month auto loan.
Being a 2000 they may only go 24 months, depends on your bank and your credit score and your history with that bank.
