Yes that is normal.
It also gets worse MPG than your Chevy and uses premium gas unlike your Chevy.

That sounds about right, with my super teflon tyres... (non stick road tyres) 60mph is about 2000 rpm and on the flat with no load thats about 18.1 mpg, according to the panic gauge (ultra gauge EM)

thanks,
he's just driving around town back and forth to school etc.
so the gas isn't a concern yet.
i was making sure there's not another gear i should be looking for
now i'm going to print out the great service list someone created
on here and hand it to him.
thanks again

Keep in mind the D II was built and focused around off road features not a 70 MPH vehicle its geared very different for very different uses than a highway commuter. The D II is improved more for a commuter than a D I is but still not made to be a speed racer. This truck usually calls for more work than other Suv's of there type and class but if the maintenance is followed from day one then they can run very well and be a great pleasure to test the capabilities they have. The discovery scheduled maintenance seems to be neglected very often and so then the second or third owner gets to deal with early failure and expensive repairs. Follow the major service and good luck with your new adventure into to ownership of a land rover!
