Default 2000 disco II/ driveshaft chirping questions

Hi. I thought it was my serpentine belt. But the sound only occurs when moving, doesn't increase with acc. Occurs forward and reverse and rolling in neutral. No sound when parked.

Q1. I have zerk fittings on my front driveshaft, ( car has 125,000 miles, this driveshaft has a landrover sticker on it and appears to have been replaced or rebuilt) did the OE have zerks? I'm going to regrease it and see what happens.

Q2. What size bolts am I removing if/when I remove it?

Q3. Can I rotate the drive shaft w/ transmission in neutral to get to the obstructed bolts?

Thanks for any help. I'm in Jamestown, ri we have a great land rover shop in town. I'm a computer engineer, I lack experience but I "think" with some guidance I can try to tackle this inexpensively.

Joe

For now till you reply, leave the drive shaft along. How often do you grease all 6 fittings and is there 1 fitting on each of the front joints?

The factory did have a zirk on the front universal joint and none on the transfer case end ( where it usually fails)

You will not be able to rotate it without it being off the ground or rolling it forwards or backwards.

What year is your truck?

I took my first road trip last night up to the snow. Part way through the ride, I got a chirping noise, and remembered hearing about it on this forum. I have not climbed under mine yet to verify the Zerks, so I became very nervous. (Will climb under and verify today since no rain today.)

My noise happened only when moving and only during left hand turns, so I thought Wheel bearing. It happened forward, backward, neutral, just like you mention.

I had my wife drive and I climbed around trying to find it. It was down by the passenger feet, so I thought Wheel Bearing or CV (I don't even know yet if this has CVs, but I know where they normally are). Poked my head out the window, and could not hear anything...

Longer story short, I turned off the heater FAN and it stopped. Fan on, chirping while turning. Luckily, I think I can take care of this.

I have only owned vehicle for 10,000 miles. It was dealer maintained. I've never greased them. I only see/feel 4 zerk fittings. 1 on each of the 3 (1 in front ,2 in rear)universal joints and one at the front of the shaft housing with a plastic cap on it.

I was praying to the rover gods disco mike would reply. Lol. What's next? Thank you so much for all u do here!

Okay on front drive shaft if you have 1 grease fitting on each universal joint then it has been rebuilt or replaced! Now for it to last you need to grease those fittings every oil change. If they are already toast greasing them will not help them any. Disco Mike " rover god " is always watching.
1 on shaft tube itself is for the slip & the cover is to keep it clean and free of dirt. Just because something was dealer serviced does not really mean much more than being serviced by a indie shop just a cost difference

The chirping is usually a warning sign of a soon to be real bad day. You can remove your front prop shaft and lock your CDL if the noise goes away you know where your problem is.
