Was quoted by a place here in Denver $250 to rebuild the entire driveshaft... I would by a new one for $300 at that price.
I too have the drive shaft with the grease fittings on each of the U joints and the slip joint.
Greased and greased them again in the fight against the squeak. I lost the battle... assume it is the pain in the butt ball joint....
$150.00 replaced the needle bearing ball joint and 1 universal joint.

I jacked her up, put in neutral. Replaced my nuts! Torqued eveything up...10 minutes later was going for a successful test drive. Thanks for everyone's input.

BTW: Anyone thinking about doing it, do it. Not a complicated job at all and the savings are substantial.

Joe

Good job Joe. Sounds like you just saved yourself a hole in the tranny.

I'm getting ready to drop the front drive shaft due to chirping, rotational, and side to side shaft play at diff and transfer case bearings. Do I just knock out the u-joints to drop it?

No. You remove the 8 bolts at the output and input flanges.

Can you get me the tube diameter, the thickness the alloy, and if it has a greasable centering ball.
Thanks Mike
Have a Merry Christmas

Thank you guys for the responses, the shaft is sitting on my work bench, and the centering ball needs to be replaced also. No joy on finding one on Crimpuss Eve. I gave the CDL two turns (is that Center Differential Lock?) and I can get back and forth to work to earn a few clams for the upcoming expenses. So now I wonder should I rebuild this ugly welded chunck of metal or get a new shaft alltogether. I am too cold and tired to look into the diameter and alloy, but I will if need be. BTW, whats a good way to tell what type of alloy this is, I'm better with wood than metal.
Except... for the gas mileage, I love my Disco II, and would rather do a proper job than throw it back together like I would a Ford. So any advice is much appreciated. Mary Crimpuss to all, and to all... cheers!
Mad.

The message above yours from Mike was to me. ....
Yes it is for a center diff lock. Chances are high tha you have a factory prop shaft and rebuilding is a option. What is it you plan to use your truck for?

Default Disco II Chirping noise

For now I use it to get to work and back. I'd like to join a local off road group, but would wait 'till I have at least two wheeler as a backup for work.
The universals were in pretty bad shape, one of the ends was completely rusted, and most of the caps shattered during removal. I'm wondering what the difference in time and money would be between repairing this drive shaft and buying a new one. I still need to find a centering ball.
I'm really glad I found this site and decided to follow the advice and "park it now!". After looking at the u-joints I'm sure the tranny was only a few more miles from getting torn up.
...'tis better to drive in two wheel drive (temporarily), then to never drive at all....
Mad.
