2000 Disco II won't start, odd noise
So this morning I went to start my 2000 Disco II and it would not crank, there was an odd noise, almost like a small metal fan turning inside a medal casing, starter motor maybe? I replaced the battery to see if that would help and it did not, same noise was being made.
I've gone through and checked the grounds and positive cables to ensure they are connected well and cleaned, no issues
Thanks for your time and help,
JJ

whirring noise? did you check voltage?
check out starter and its connections. don't forget the little one.
not advising, but all that check out, I would hit it with a little hammer and see if the "fonz" method works.

You're not going to believe this, just went out to attempt to start it again, got the "whirring noise" and stopped trying to crank it then quickly tried again and it started. It is now running and I am going to take it to Advance Auto to get the error codes read. I will keep you posted.
And thanks for your help Dusty

Sounds like the starter may not be throwing out the Bendix gear. Had the same thing happened with Bosch starters on a couple other cars, the throwout assembly gets all crudded up with crud and sounds like the starter is just spinning free. Sometimes it breaks through and throws out the gear and engages, sometimes not. Cleaning out all the crap and sludge works wonders
