Default 2000 lr shifting into neutral while driving?! help me!

I own a 2000 Land Rover Discovery 2 series and when I start it up and put it into drive it will drive about three to four miles then shift into neutral and the only way to get it back into drive is to shut the vehicle off, turn the key into the ignition point until all the bells an whistles go off, then it will start driving again? Can someone plz help me!

The transmission is electronically controlled. You move the shift lever, that moves the XYZ switch on the side of the tranny, and contacts inside that tell the tranny computer what you want to do. It signals various valves to open/close. Might look at that. Whole section on the transmission in the shop manual, called the RAVE, free download below.

the shifter stays in drive but the transmission kicks out of gear.. the truck eventually will come to a stop and I can rev the engine in the drive gear.

Without turning the engine off, can you put truck in reverse and move immediately in that direction?

How many miles on it, have you checked your fluid level, when was it last serviced and do you have any fault code numbers?

Haven't hooked to see any fault codes, can't make it anywhere with the truck and don't own one.. Guess I could drive until it shifts out of gear, stop, ignition, restart, then drive again until I make it... long process

Mileage is about 175,000, but I've changed the tranny fluid and added some Lucas heavy duty tranny fluid fix with new gasket. Drove fine for about 2-3 weeks and did it all over again. Sometimes if I let it sit a week it'll wanna drive right as if it's fixed then start acting up...
I'm just plain lost...
