Default 2000 Random Misfire

Hi all new owner,

Truck ran rough at idle, occasional code for a 02 sensor. This was due to an exhaust leak. Idle Air control valve, the stepper motor was gone replaced. Truck still ran rough, cleaned the throttlebody gently with a toothbrush while I had a pry bar on the gas pedal (truck off) truck was a bit rough still used seafoam seemed to run fine. Drove it a bit, got sudden random misfires all on bank 1 - 1 3 5 7. Ses light flashing, changed spark plugs, ensured correct gap. Went away for a minute seems to have a high idle when started. Then misfires once it comes down, found a loose vacuum line to the IAC. Corrected, 3 - 5 keep misfiring. Pulled the wire connector for the coil up, plugged in a spare coil I had sitting around, ran new wires. Misfires jumped to 4 and 6 + random misfires.

Maybe I've just got two bad coils? Or could something else be at play?

You will get misfires unless the coil brackets are securely bolted to the engine assembly.

Ah ok. My assessment of it being a coil pack is probably correct then?

If I put a jack on the oil pan, and removed the motor mounts how much flex does this engine have? Im thinking I could sneak the coil pack out

It's not really possible to say if it's the coil packs since you're not testing them properly if you have them sitting like that. But replacements are like $30 apiece so why not change them anyway.
I had mine out in half an hour yesterday, and I have SAI on my truck. Just remove the upper intake manifold. Make sure you have a replacement gasket ready to go.

I was able to "sneak" out both coil packs on my '99 without removing the motor mounts. No problem doing that; it'll give you a little more room but it's not absolutely necessary. Wouldn't even bother to try on an SAI truck.

what did you do, did the whole bracket come out or just those 8MM bolts and the one pack at a time? It's in my work parking lot atm, so if I cant fit them out I may opt for a tow. If I just decide to pull the intake off does the ac compressor, clutch fan and all that jazz need to come off or can I get away with just sneaking those 6 bolts out and unhooking the throttlebody and cooling lines?

Don't even need to take off the coolant lines. There's enough flex in them to move the upper intake aside without disconnecting them. So yes, just the six bolts for the intake and the four bolts for the coil pack bracket.

Oh awesome, I'll give it a go once I have the new part. Going to order a new part instead of risking a used one
