There is a small salvage yard here with an '01 DII that I have bought a few parts off of the last couple years. I was there yesterday and got to talking with the owner about the truck's history. He claims the seller told him the engine was running well but there was an electrical problem and the engine would simply stop running for no apparent reason. Light bulb! Crankshaft position sensor. If all that is correct it sounds like the engine could be in good shape. They want $400 for the engine, but it's a u-pull yard so the buyer would need to be someone reasonably nearby, unless you could sweet talk them into pulling the engine, crating it and shipping it, but I figured that a $400 starting price leaves some room to negotiate, etc. PM me if you'd like any more info.
