Default 2001 DII Lifters 4.0

In process of doing some work on the motor. Noticed that the lifters 7 of 16 appear to be not opening all the way. When you look at the lifter there is a keeper lock that stops the lifter from comming apart. Well 7 of the 16 lifters have at least 1/16th to 1/8th gap between the lock wire and the inner lifter appears that they are stuck before reaching the top of the lifter. If I take the lock wire out the lifter stays together. Ideas?? I am going to replace lifters/push rods and rocker arms anyways, but would this cuase a "Lifter Noise?" Thanks for answers

It is time for lifters, but do you have any actual wear on either enf of the push pods, if not leave them along.
How amny miles on your truck? It would be a good idea for you to go to the LRO, look in the D2 section for my sticky on head gasket and valve train noise, before you order any parts. I am suggesting this cause you need to inspect the rock arms, rocker arms also and replave the cam cause with our soft cams, if you throw a set of lifters without a cam you will have huge problems.
Also need to replace the timing gear set and oil pump if you are at 120,000 miles or more.
If you have any questions send me your number so we can talk.

OK mike I see where your coming from.I see no wear on either the push rod ends or the metal tab on the Rocker arm that touches the valve stem. Also there is no scraping /cupping/or gouging of the lifter end that go against the cam. Turned the cam over and checked the lobes and from what I see there is no discoloration/scuffs on the lobes or ends. My only problem is the lifters not opening and closing the full length. The Disco has 120K miles and looks like the heads were done. I do suspect that the lifters are sticky and will be replacing the entire 16 and 16 push rods. I am aware that there are also left and right arms(rocker). I feel confident that there is no further damage than bad lifters from being stuck.
Truck ran great except for the lifter noise every so often. I have taken my share of motors apart and I just never ran accross the difference in the lifters like I have seen. They are either cupped or show damage on the Cam end. Mine just look to be all gummed up. I took one apert and afret cleaning the varnish off it regained it's normal inside height....right aginst the keeper pin.

All the lifters are out and I am going to replace the lifters, and pushrods. Took the rocker arms off cleanded the arms /shafts and re assembled them in same order. No signs of wear or discoloration. I ask simple questions and get long drawn out answers. I've done tear downs before and am not a newbie at engine work, but from time to time I like to ask questions to reaffirm the answers. I don't like getting answers that make mountians out of molehills. Not every Land Rover needs a total tear down at 120xxx miles. I've worked at stealerships and thats the way they make their cash. Replace everything and cover all the bases. If parts are not worn/broken/damaged why replace them....just because its apart?? I could just take the Motor and replace it with a rebuilt, but why waste the $$$. If your a good enough mechanic you should be able to judge what is broken and needs replacement..........

True enough, however these engines have a number of oil pump failures around that time, cracked parts. So at least do a manual PSI test on the oil pump, if not change it out. While front cover is open, timing chain; there were posts about a Chevy/GM cross refernce for like $30. Also, Rover made two variations in lifter height, it is mentioned in the shop manual, they were color coded so they would not be mixed, but who knows...

Which is a good point, it wouldn't hurt to do a oil pressure test, cold at idle and 2000 RPM's and again when at operating temp, idle and 2000 RPM's.
