Post 2001 Disco engine Failure problems

when i was driving my 2001 Disco some weeks ago the engine completely quit on me as i was driving. as i had it sit for some time i was able to get it restarted with turning the ignition key. i was able to drive it back to the house and get it in the garage. i could not get it started again for days. everything works in the vehicle but just can not get it to fire. then i was able to get it to fire and drove up to the autozone to get a new battery because i remember that i put a old battery in it last year. then it did it again as i was pulling in the driveway and have not been able to get it started. i have heard it could be a MAF, O2 sensors, etc. does anyone think it is the alternator? the water pump was put in new last year. i would be great if someone could respond.

Sounds like a classic crank position sensor. About $75 for one at AutoZone.

The CPS gets hot and will quit working, it is what sends the information to the plugs for fire. You can also find a video on You Tube to show you how to install it.

Default 2001 Disco intermediate starting

Well, I tried the new Crank position sensor and no luck. it still will start sometime and while driving completely shut down. it will try to crank but will not fire. lights and everything work. then after a few hours or days it may start. any idea, I would greatly appreciate it. i called the dealer and they said they have never heard of this problem. Imagine that!

BAck to basics. When it does this, pull off a plug wire, attach to your favorite spare spark plug, lay that on the mainfold, don't hold it, abd crank truck , some one watch for sparks. No sparks is most likely the sensor, since it is new may be how it is mounted. Goes like this - sensor in the block, barrel spacers on the bolts, cover on the bolts, nuts. Many times spacers are messed up and it still won't crank, or is erratic. Or cable from the sensor. Also, the spacer on the sensor is different on auto vs manual transmissions.

If you have sparks, what about fuel pressure (schraeder test valve)?

Any codes?
