Also what ever you get serious on have a pre-purchase inspection done by a good Rover mechanic, will save you a lot of money in the long run. Also plane on having the front drive shaft rebuilt and a major service, costing around $1000 retail.
Yesterday I rebuilt my front driveshaft on my 03 disco for around $70, the cost of 3 u joints with grease fittings. The CV joint center ball was good, just cleaned and greased the bearings. So, if you do your own work, you can save a lot of money. The dealer quoted me $1000 for a drive shaft, or around $300 from a drive shaft shop.

You never rebuild a double cardon without replacing the centering ball, be ready for it to fail real soon, not a wise thing to suggest to anyone else to do.

I would have replaced it, but I could not find the parts for the ball. The dealer and the aftermarket suppliers that I checked did not have it. The grease in the bearing still looked new, light brown and clear. The only reason my u joint failed was lack of grease. It was dry. The other joints in the shaft still had grease. The ball was not worn out. I took out all the bearings, cleaned them, and greased them. It should be good for a while.

Now I found that Toddco has the part for about $30 (ordered the part).
Land Rover Driveshafts

So, I will take it apart and replace it in the fall. I'm tired of working in 100+ degree heat.

I was not recommending that others skip it, I has just trying to give an idea of the money that can be saved by doing your own work.
Thanks for the advice.

I hate it when you call the dealer for a $50 part, and the response is "That's not available, but I can sell you the whole assembly for $1000."
