Unhappy 2002 DII Stalls...and other issues

I have an 02 DII with around 159,000 miles that I’ve owned for 6 months. I check all of the fluids regularly, and haven’t had any trouble until....

The other night I was driving through the middle of nowhere when I heard a noise under the hood and the battery light came on. I assumed that the belt or the alternator had failed. Since it was late and I was in the middle of nowhere, I decided to watch the temperature gauge and try to limp to the nearest gas station. The truck ran fine and the temperature gauge never moved. When I pulled into the gas station the truck stalled, the temperature gauge pegged and the battery and oil lights came on. Under the hood I found that the water pump had failed, thrown the belt, damaged the fan, and punctured the radiator. I had the DII towed home the next morning.

I have replaced the water pump, fan, serpentine belt, radiator, coolant. I don’t see any evidence of water in my oil , oil in my coolant, or white sweet smelling smoke coming out of the tail pipe.

When I finished the radiator job tonight I filled up the coolant, started it up, and let it reach temperature. Then I drove it for 15-20 minutes. Everything seemed normal until the last couple minutes of my test drive. I noticed that I was losing power. When I pulled into the driveway it once again stalled and the battery/oil lights came on.

The oil level looks good. I still don’t see any evidence of coolant in the oil/oil in the coolant. After the engine cooled I started it back up and smelled a strong rotten egg smell. The SES light was also flashing which I assume is indicating a misfire. Any ideas what I should start chasing now? Thank in advance.

Most likely a blown head gasket. Coolant temp gauge doesn't read actual temperature of engine, you probably were well into the 235, or more, range by the time you stalled.

Oil and charging light coming on after it stalls would be normal...it's not running...so...there is no oil pressure or charging of battery going on.

4.0 is pretty resilient, so a head gasket job should do the trick, few hundred in parts and a couple weekends of your time.
