98 freelander 18i overheating
hi, my freelander 18i is overheating and cuts out after a short drive [about 5-6 miles], my temp gauge stopped working a few weeks ago so i bought a new one today but it still doesnt work, i dont have any coolant leaks and my oil is fine, so why is my engine getting so hot, any help please and thanks for your time
1. If gauge does not work, then you determine it is overheating by - driving until dead? Not a good path. Plug in a scanner to the OBDII port, and you can see the coolant temp in digital fashion. Norm would be 190 - 216 F, if it climbs to 225, no point going all the way to 235 or 250... or higher.
2. What could cause such a rapid temp climb?
Thermostat could be stuck closed.
Water pump could be totally failed, but then you would have no heat circulation up the hoses to radiator, no circulation visible in the coolant recovery tank, and no engine running, since your water pump is driven by the camshaft timing belt. BTW, when water pump eventually siezes due to corrosion from lack of coolant swaps, it can break timing belt and cause much bigger problems. If changing timing belt on a scheule, change coolant pump at same time.
Radiator could be restricted, with sludge build up in lower rows of radiator. That normally shows up as overheating after longer operation, but without a working gauge it may have slipped up on you.
Head gaskets, but you would normally have coolant loss, either into oil, drip on ground, or white smoke out the tail pipe. Cracked block is also a possibility. Saved the expensive ones for last.
Attached is flow chart for cooling, a lot more plumbing than on a humble Disco. From a 2001 unit, may be similar.
Suggest you attach a code reading scanner or ultra gauge and discontinue driving until sorted out. Without accurate info, you don't even know if it is heat that is taking you out.
