Default 2002 Kalahari in Charlotte - RIP

DIIs in the salvage yards around here have become very scarce, so I smiled when I got an email notification yesterday that a 2002 was available on the yard locally.

I played hooky from work late this afternoon, and slowly realized that what I was looking at was a Kalahari.

It would have been easier had it been painted yellow, but at first glance it was just a white DII. The first thing that caught my eye were the unusual wheels, but it still didn't click for me.

Then I noticed the "SPECIAL VEHICLES" ID plate in the engine compartment. Then it clicked. Some other clues were the gray interior and fabric seats (trashed), and the blackout decal on the bonnet that was not immediately noticed because the hood was up when I approached. The SafariGard front bumper is long gone, of course.

If someone would like to chase down the Kalahari wheels, please note that I saw only four - the right front was missing. There was a sign at this self-service yard that said they will remove parts.

The only thing I salvaged was the uncommon binnacle switch cover pictured. That may come in handy if I ever want to add some auxiliary lighting.

BTW, I took a quick look at the console, which was already out of the truck and on the ground. I think all the window switch tabs were intact. Rare. I didn't look closely at the interior door panels, but they were all removed and in the rear compartment.

Did I miss something I should have grabbed?

It’s a bummer when such a special model ends up in that state. I’d love a Kalahari to restore to stock.

If it still had the SG rocker guards = Serious $$$ right there.... The front bumper on a Kalahari was just the usual 99-02 plastic bumper however it was trimmed as a high profile unit and it did not have the area where the fog lights usually sat. Unique stuff = SG Rocker guards, Typhoon wheels treated with grey paint in the center, unique interior color combo of black/grey, hood black out, usually had rear lamp guards top/bottom, and the plaque under the hood. It also probably had a locking CDL TC (of coarse with no linkage).

I'd have liked the plaque under the hood as mine is loosing it's text/color from all the TX heat.

I'd love to have those wheels even if there are only four... Where abouts are you at?

Edit: just saw the post title again...

I'm in Winston Salem every couple weeks right now. You wouldn't happen to know what they charge per wheel would you?

Hey Alex,

I got the rear bumper early Monday morning. Sadly I needed it after my 17 year old learned the hard way about how a small trailer can jack knife when reversing. Anyway got lucky, $50 replacement bumper with no cracks.

The other wheels did not look as good as the spare. You will most likely need to re-spray them.

Usual cost is about $50 per wheel but you also have to pay $25 for the tire.

The auxiliary light switch was a good pick up. British Parts Utah still sells them and they are around $80.

Wow 80.00 for that switch? I've grabbed several over the years for like 1.00 each. The LR aux light kit was so $$$ people usually just did their own wiring vs pay for the LR kit.

Only rare LR's I've come across were P38's. A Holland & Holland with the super rare table in the back to sit your shotguns on (very rare and sought after item), a Callaway, and a Westminster.

Ken, thanks! Any idea what the name of the yard is? I may call and see if they could hold them, and if they'd waive the tire fee.

Hey Alex, did you have any luck getting the wheels off the Kalahari?
