I picked up a 2003 parts truck a couple
months back and just got around to tearing down the engine. The previous owner said it blew a head gasket as it lost coolant and white smoke out of the tail pipe. As I tore it down I noticed the exhaust ports on the two center cylinders on the passenger side where steam cleaned. Not a good sign. Anyway take a look at the pictures below. My guess is that the liner slipped low enough for the top piston ring to pop out and destroy it. It must have been loose for some time as the cylinder head has quite a groove hammered into it.
This was just a parts truck so was pulling everything off of it. A spare block would have been nice, oh well. Interestingly this was the same cylinder that failed on my old 2004.
That is quite interesting, the lower end of the block is supposed to support the liner.
Great point. I had the sump off to get the torque converter bolts out but didn’t notice any metal fragments. The engine also bars over as normal, I’ll take a look at the underside of the block soon.
Some follow up pictures as I finished stripping the block. The crank and the rod on the damaged cylinder does not look bent to the eye but will have to measure. This engine had 135k on it.
Engine had lots of oil leaks between the transmission but the rear main seal and crucifix seal was dry
The oil leaks where from the oil pan gasket in the rear and one of the oil gallery plugs.
There was a lip to hold the sleeve in place...
This is what the lip should look like, flush with the sleeve.
