New member here guys! This forum is LOADED with info, and also loaded with CONCERN! I am contemplating a 2003 Discovery with 32,000 miles. Are these things reliable for a daily driver?? I mean, I have no problems with oil changes, trans fluid changes, general preventive maintenance, etc. But is it going to be the PAIN in the rear that my Porsche was? Would I be better off with an Xterra or Cherokee? I need this thing to GO when I turn the key. INPUT APPRECIATED!!

 

ALL CARS HAVE PROBS. anyway it will make a good daily driver if you take car of it. What kind of probs did you have w/ your porsche? Was it properly maintained. I know lots of people w/ porsche's and they are very great cars. Any car not taken care of will become junk day by day. Land rovers are more expensive to repair than yuo avg. domestic car but maintance is the key with every car. good luck, and if you get it you will really enjoy it. Don't buy a JEEP!

 

Sorry MM.......I didn't mean to imply that the Porsche was a POS or anything, it was just VERY expensive and required more than normal maintenance. All of the vehicles that I have owned in my 51 years got by very well with just regular fluid changes and the normal nickel & dime stuff well into their 100,000's. Am I going to be able to get the Disco by with $50-$75 or so a month on the average? Man, I would REALLY like to have this thing, but I don't want to get into a lot of daily problems. No matter how small.

 

If well taken care of, I would say about a $1,000. a year would cover problems. May be less may be more but that sounds about avg. If it is not going to be your daily driver or at least has a day or two off a week it should be o.k. I have a 98 and in 4 months of owning it i put in a fuel pump (100 bucks, theres a secret to that but if needed i will share), and had to replace fan clutch, which i just did an electric fan for the performance and economy. Only missed 1 day of work (fuel pump) in those 4 months cause of it. And it is my daily driver, so my opinion is it is great, and i do keep it properly maintained. I also do all my own work on it as well.

 

Thanks for the feedback & info. Only problem that I can forsee with this particular Discovery is the fact that it was originally a rental (Hertz, New Jersey, for 12,900 miles.) You gotta wonder how well the rental companies perform maintenance. It was owned by a private owner up until the present 32,000 miles. A Dodge dealer has it as a trade-in. The dealer has NO paperwork about previous maintenance that has/hasn't been performed. Can it be suspect to a situation already with only 32,000 miles??
