Working on the front hub. Not is straightforward as the rears. I’m going to try not to have to fully pull out the front axle because I don’t want to break the ABS. Hopefully this is out enough.
4 hours later, I Got the new front diff in. Still got a long way to go as the front axle has some complications I did not anticipate. Tomorrow I will finish putting everything back, add the one inch spacers, add oil and take it for a test drive.
Drove to work yesterday in the Disco. No bad omens to speak of with the diffs - they seem fine to me. Still in break-in (about 950 miles left) so I will know for sure when I change the oil then.
The 1 inch spacers kicked my butt more that the diffs but I finally got them in after I picked up a set spring compressors at HF and man-handled them in there. Hardest part was aligning the shock bolts up but I got it.
I’m a bit concerned though on the swaying feeling at highway speeds. It’s just not comfortable for me so before I do anything drastic, I’ll be jacking up the front end, checking the steering components, making sure everything is tight and then maybe adjust the slack in the steering box. If that doesn’t fix it, I’ll take it to the shop to have it realigned.
While I am under there today, I’ll go ahead and add the Terrafirma diff armor. It seems like an easy bolt on.
My green disco with 3" of lift and the sway bars still connected is pretty solid on ramps. My white one with no sways and super sketchy steering is scary lol. I think you're on the right track, check everything and double check the steering box slack (that's where my issue lies just haven't messed with it yet as that truck doesn't move so fast regardless lol).
I’m at 4 in lift and with front sway connected, there is still some sway.
it’s the front caster is too far back. Offset caster arms will fix and I make sure to run more tire pressure in the rear and that seems to help a little
Well today was a bust - literally. Replaced the low pressure steering hose because the old one looked like it had been patched. Also inspected the steering and front suspension but couldn’t see anything loose or any failure points. Tried to adjust the slack in the steering box but stripped the torx adjustment screw. So I decided to put it back together and take it to be aligned. Went to torque the drag link and broke it off. Misread the torque 80Nm - not 80 lbft 🤬🤬🤬
Guess it’s time for an upgrade!
Patch on the LP hose? Too much torque! Stepped the torx adjustment screw.
Finished the spot rust removal. Pretty simple - hit it with the descaler, the wire wheel. Then som black rust reformer. Once that dried, I covered it with black flexiseal.
