2004 Disco 2 Engine Rebuild
#441
4/24 Update
Well the steering box is back in. What a PIA messing with that drop arm. Got the box mounted then added the drop arm and nut. I had to buy a 1 5/8” socket to get it back on. Married that up with a breaker bar and 3 feet of pipe. Didn’t have a strong enough torque wrench but I put my full 200 lbs behind it.
Added the pentosin and worked it in to the gears while it groaned. Bled the box and topped off with some Lucas with conditioners. Steering is nice and smooth.
Of course no disco project of mine is complete without some sort of screw up or missing part. After I got everything back together, I realized the gap between the drop arm and the steering box was wider than on the one I removed. Turns out I am missing at least a dust seal of some sort. 😒 I assume the other seals are in place or I would be dumping fluid everywhere. Contacting the mfg to see if they can send me one. Not looking forward to pulling that drop arm off again.

5/27 Update
Steering issues still not resolved. Also not a fan of the rebuilt steering box. No dust cap, it’s already leaking and the steering is stiff and unresponsive. Going to take it to British 4x4 and see if maybe I just haven’t adjusted it right.
Probably end up filing a warranty claim with Rockauto though. Ugh!
Leaking around the adjustment screw and at least one of the top bolts.

no this guy is out of Jacksonville. Worked for a dealer for 20 years before opening his own shop. This guy finished my engine install back in 2019. Super fast, experienced and really reasonable in price.
I like to do my own work where I can but I am actually looking forward to taking the disco there on Wednesday.

Yes, hearr you like to do my own work as well. You are way beyond what I can do, but either way always is nice to have an expert nearby. Having some ongoing electrical issues not resolved yet but shop owner spent half day and didn’t charge me. That doesn’t happen often ! Glad you found someone good nearby. Looking forward to your updates.

Not taking the Disco into the shop until Wednesday. While waiting, I picked up and open box Grom audio unit. Install was relatively easy. Used the file folder hanger tool, but had to use a pry bar to get it to come out. Pulled out the blue plug to the cd changer and added the blue plug for the grom. Tucked it all back into the dash and ran the mic through the slots below the valet tray. 30 minute job - phone calls and music from iPhone sound great!

Finally got the Disco back with the 3rd replacement steering box. No leaks on this one and the steering seems solid. Decided to finish my last major upgrade before my trip: I upgraded from 32” Cooper Adventurer ATs to 33” Yokohama Geolander MTs. Obviously they are louder on the highway, but not too much. Going to test them out tomorrow at the Ocala Hard Rock 4x4 Park. https://hardrockoffroadpark.com/4x4-vehicle

Got my Disco dialed in. Heading to Uwarrie on the 31st - 1st for some fishing and offroading. Let me know if any of you guys on the east coast want to get your Disco out of the garage. Never been there but I hear the trails are pretty sweet.
