2004 Disco II, 90k miles, Air Suspension fail - bags, compressor, sensors
Hey folks - so I know that most people replace the rear air suspension with coils b/c once the it fails, coils are not problematic. That being said - my airbags failed, had them replaced (at a new shop) - was told the air compressor was fine. Took the truck out for some off-roading in mud & water a week later. Hosed it down, got a car wash - seemed that the air bag failed again - took it back to the same shop - was told the air compressor had to be replaced - that the mud/dust/water infiltrated the sealed compressor & it was kaput. So, had that replaced. Then the air suspension was still not working - was told the air sensors were acting wonky, they cleaned them...then eventually replaced them with a used pair of sensors...and guess what - still having issues (rear is raised, doesn't go down even after hitting the dash button to lower it). They hooked up the scan tool - manually adjusted rear wheel levels - and then the sensors kept firing off to re-align improperly.
So my question is:
What is the likelihood that the airbags, then the air compressor, then the air sensor go out in sequence like this? granted the truck is 20yrs old, but seems like a coincidental sequence of events - so wanted to see if this is common or perhaps if something is amiss in the diagnostic evaluation & subsequent work.

Yeah, that's a bad shop. If you want better help you should post the codes from SLS. Just some general info: If you have a leaky bag it will go down quick. You can either hear it hissing or its down in the morning. You can unhook the battery while it is pumped up to take out any weird electronic issue. I've never replaced height sensors or a compressor on a Discovery 2 in 22 years of working on them. (Not from build quality issues. I have replaced plenty of height sensors destroyed by branches, and compressors full of water.)
ok thank you - that was my feeling - the only 2 things that possibly contributed to the air suspension becoming an issue is that the truck was parked still on an incline for 3 months & not used. had to replace the battery - and it was shortly after that I started having these issues. My understanding is that the air compressor is sealed, so for something to penetrate it would be tough - and that since it's only rear air suspension, there is not a valve block (could be wrong here) - but if there was any compressor issue, it may have come up after they replaced the air bags & perhaps didn't re-connect everything (the valves, etc...) well enough?
