But if the vehicle is a 2004 I think the mechanism is already there.

True! Along with (presumably) the final version of the SLABS unit.

if the case is just leaking, just fix the leak.....you can get all the seals from:
https://ashcroft-transmissions.co.uk/
fast shipper!

and if you want to add the diff lock shifter, they have a kit....or you might be able to source an 04 shifter kit....I did this in my 2001, you can read about it here:

He's putting it in a 2004 truck, so it will already have the shifter.

OP, what do you mean by "leaked its fluids"?

as in, the TC was completely empty of fluid or it just has leaks?

every D2 i have owned has had a leaky TC. i just check the fluid level and top off as needed.

The previous owner told me it leaked its fluid and started making odd noises.

He also told me they already replaced the original unit w a 2003 unit so the lockable front section to possibly swap is not there any longer… but someone posted a link above to get that. I’ll look into it after posting rn.

I haven’t done anything since I posted this thread just been busy but that’s about to change. 🙂

often, the 03 TC does not have the machining for the diff lock done to the front housing. so even if you have the 'locking' parts, they won't work. You state that you picked up an 03 TC..if you are not sure, post a pic of the top of the front housing. Swapping out for the correct front housing and adjusting the bearings to correct preload is not really a 'simple' process if you are not familiar with these TC's....

Also, it may be easier to get an 04 low miles TC. I have seen them for sale with shipping for as little as 200$. Just make sure it has the correct front housing and you should be good to go. Since you said you want the locking center diff, finding an 04 TC seems a good option...

RSDevil,

Here is the pic of a 2004 transfer case. The 2003 will not have the Center Diff Lock nipple as shown in the red circle. This is the part that connects to the CDL lever in your center console (via a cable linkage in your 2004 Disco.

I have an 03 D2
Put 04 center diff linkage in it along with a used 04 transfer case.

The TC ended up leaking, had metal in the oil, and at some point stopped going into Low. High and High Locked work, so did Neutral. But would no longer go into Low.

I replaced with an Ashcroft unit and no more leaks along with all positions working. You can spec the High range ratio and other options. Maybe a thought vs rebuilding or used unit swapping.

I just want to make sure I have this right since the truck is FINALLY going to my transmission guy.

My truck is a 2004.

The junkyard transfer case I have is a 2003 & the entire cable hook up is missing. By cable hook up I mean the area where someone circled in the red in a picture they posted above to identify a 2004 unit.

My transmission guy can use the 2003 transfer case he just needs to change the housing in order for the 2003 TC to have the 2004 cable hook up….?
