I think the 285s would be better suited on an alloy to help cut down on some of the weight. The rover alloys are quite robust and have great bead retention.
The 285/75 size is definitely better looking but other than that, they kinda suck by comparison.
i can understand from your impressions post above. The previous owner of my 04 went down from 32’s to 255/70 for similar reasons. Personally I don’t like the 255s and can’t wait to fit the 285s or similar. But I also plan on regearing. Enjoy the new tires bro! Do what works!
Nice video. All good points. Incidentally, I am also a member of the itty bitty tire committee the previous owner of Clarkson also down sized the tires and he told me he did it for similar reasons. I still thought the truck looked whimpy and just a bit “off” but still good enough, of course we all have our own ideas on how things should look and still too small for my taste and I will change them shortly. He went from 32s..can’t recall exactly what the measurements were..down to 255/70R16..30”x10”
He had fitted a OME 2” lift.
Heres Clarkson in his refined and civilized shoes.

I have vacillated (obsessed) about these tires for the past 2 weeks (don't we all?).
The way I see it, I have 2 options:
Get a set of 265/75 r16's and call it a day (they look more balanced on the D2).
I would have to loose about $400. New tires $1000 - sell existing tires for about $600 (hopefully)
They really aren't much wider, but wide enough to look "right"ish
Weight will be increased by about 5-10 pounds depending on the tire
I loose some of the skinny tire advantages (weight, less rolling resistance, off road traction, etc)
They honestly look average (not very unique), not bad, but not great (vs the aggressive 285/75's)
I might buy them, loose the money and still think they look wimpy (the horror!)
Keep these tires (235/85) and get some steel wheels to compliment them (heavily weighted toward appearance).
The rim size is a great fit for the tire (7" vs 8")
Steel wheels look awesome (totally subjective, I know)
The combination of skinny tires and steel wheels would likely overcome the wimpy look and enter the category of unique even utilitarian...maybe even Overlandy
Weight will be increased, but only by about 5 pounds (D2 S model wheels = 24lbs vs Honda Odyssey wheels = 29lbs) and yes, I put my D2 wheels on a scale
Cost will be about the same as buying the wider tires (Brand new set of aftermarket Honda Odyssey wheels 5 x $79.00 + tax, etc = $429 + lug nuts = $30 + mount and balance $125 + machine center bore + - $200) = $700ish
I have to deal with the hassle of finding a machine shop that will bore the centers
I will get compliments/questions about where I got those steel wheels
Well, after weighing these factors, I decided to pull the trigger on the steel wheels. After looking at many photos of @dswilly 's truck (and picking his brain about these wheels (thanks)), I can't deny the beauty and uniqueness of the combo of 235/85's and steel wheels. Also, I think with the green Raptor Liner on my truck, this wheel/tire combo will work (look) correct. I'll probably make a YouTube video about the process of getting the wheels on the truck.
I have also been obsessing and I picked up a set a of 16x8 -35 offset Challenger steel wheels from the UK. (Pictured below) I’ve decided to go big.
Should end up looking similar to this.
Although there are many options for lug nuts on ebay and amazon. I went with these and they have been rock solid. No loosening, etc. They will not work with the spare mount as the studs are too long. I have some open nuts for that and plan to replace those at some point. I have locks I got off amazon. I will send that link too when I find it. The roadready wheel is a 60 degree conical seat.
