If you are going to worry about the reliability of the DII why not just get a DI?

That's why I sold my DI and bought a Honda. Having two rovers just wasn't reliable enough, especially when they both were broken at the same time

We have a Volvo and my Rover, my Rover is more reliable than not only my wifes Volvo but our neighbors Honda Odyssey and Camry.

not worried about the reliability of it!!! I just know a guy that happens to have a DI that is wrecked but still runs. I could pick up the whole truck for 600 bucks... it would help me if I could use the drive line as a spare. also a lot cheaper then buying a junkyard one!! If i could even find one around here that did not require me selling one or two of my appendages!!!!!!!!

Buy the donor DI and then buy a good running one.
I am always looking for a spare DI to throw in my garage and then use at my leisure.

But either way, yes, you can buy a BOSCH 4.0 block and rebuild it with 4.6 parts and have a 4.6.
HOWEVER without the 4.6 computer you have done nothing other than rebuild a 4.0.
It is very common to install a used DII 4.0 into a '03-'04 when the engine blows up because it is a direct drop in.
Also keep in mind that you can buy a P-38 4.6 from a wrecked Range Rover or a Range Rover that is in very vary bad shape.
The P-38 also uses the BOSCH system.

Hey Spike, so you're saying the 4.6 has the same harness and will bolt up to a DII? I need to replace the motor in my 99 DII and if it's not much more than a 4.0 then 12 extra horse power would be nice.
