Replaced the airbox lid on my 2000 (4.0) today as the old one was cracked on the side. Used a new rubber O-ring (very hefty O-ring!) to the MAF sensor side of the airbox.
The old one had a seal stuck to the cover, grey foam, that looked *maybe* like someone just added it in there. Which might explain why my airbox clips kept breaking (they were broken when I bought the truck and I replaced w/ some from junkyard, then the long clip cracked again and broke). This seal was keeping the airbox lid slightly high, and I wonder if it was actually causing an air leak.
Was this grey seal material stock / am I missing a seal - or does the lid just seal to the rubber of the air filter as I suspect?
Looks like you are missing a clip at the MAF sensor side of the new cover.
I don't remember having foam on the cover but I'll check. Normally the air filter should seal the area when it's clamped down with the 2 clamps.

Yes, thank you -- I think the prior owner or prior mechanic must have added it in when the airbox lid cracked. (I swapped the 2 MAF clips from old to new, when I took the pic I still hadn't moved one over)
Your second photo (with red circled area) is where a "clip" previously held your MAF sensor cable. Those clips often break. An inelegant repair is to use a long zip tie to hold the MAF cable secure, just so that the cable doesn't get stressed at the connection point to the MAF sensor. As for the duct tape: you'll soon enough know if the seal will hold without the attaching clips. Probably not!
