I have a chance to purchase a 2004 Disco II with 122K miles, PO states that he was driving and {quote} "engine made a noise". He stated that the truck was running without issues and has a nice file with recent receipts of brakes, rotors(front & back), frequent oil changes, new alternator & belt, rebuild starter, A/C serviced and overall good maintenance record, truck is very clean inside and out. I can get a 4.0 from a wreck that stills runs with 88K miles (still in the vehicle), my question is *can I install this engine to replace the existing 4.6?*, by the way, the 4.6 has the secondary air pump. I can wrench pretty good, however, not much experience with Land Rover. In the event that can be done I would freshen up the 4.0 with new gaskets, coils, plugs, any information will be greatly appreciated.

 

Yes, but you have to deal with the SAI vs Non SAI

 

can I just swap the components from the 4.o into the 4.6?....

 

We put an SAI equipped 4.0 in my wife's SAI equipped 2004 that had a 4.6.

If you are putting a motor with SAI into a non SAI car, the easiest would be to change the heads to non SAI and install the motor.

 

X2 on the above.

 

Revision- the most easiest would be to put a blank off bolt/plug in the 2 SAI holes on each head.

 

And also switch out the computer with one from a non-SAI Discovery so that you don't have the constant check engine light.

So, the vehicle is SAI equipped and you want to put a non SAI motor in. If that's correct, a little more tricky.

As mentioned above you would need an non SAI computer. That means you have to switch ECU, BECM, and the gauge cluster(unless you have acces to a diagnostic comp).

Since you plan on doing the heads, it seams the easiest is to switch the heads to SAI equipped and then just bolt it all back together.

If you don't want SAI, then you need to remove all that stuff and get a new computer set up.

 

Wouldnt swapping the heads be easier.
