Default 4.0l & 4.6l

I have a tapping 2003 4.6L Disco II with 65k miles and no clue as to how long the motor will last, but the embarassment of a ticking motor is starting to annoy me.

it was suggested on another thread to take a 4.0 block and use my 4.6 internals with the 4.0 block to stop the tapping.

my question is whats different in the complete motor assemblies? I can buy a complete 4.0L engine for $1200, will it bolt in and replace my 4.6? I dont care about the HP or toque difference...I'm looking for a simple and inexpensive solution, is there is such a thing...

edit: I dont really want a frankenstein motor that I have to explain to the idiot kids at the oil change place.

I will be so happy when this fad on every tick is a sleeve issue goes away. For years we have had tickers and 90 plus 5 of the time they are always valve train related, certainly not crack issues.
If you want to read up on this issue, go to the LRO and ready the sticky I posted related to head gaskets and valve train noise, this will point you in the right direction.

Blocks are the same, 4.6L uses a longer crank stroke. You can swap the internals right over and go.

And you can just bolt in the 4.0 if you want to, assuming that it is a motronic engine and not a GEMS engine, and has SAI like your 2003 probably does.

Isn't there ecu issus's that come with that? And no, I can't spell, lol.

No one complains about it, they say it just works. Looking in microcat, I only see two ECU for CDN/MEX/USA, one for SAI and one without. I'm guessing it just figures it out based on MAF and O2. The older GEMS computers in the D1 actually have two "programs" or "maps" one for 4.0 and one for 4.6, but I'm not sure if the bosch has the same thing going on.

Well, I have a 4.0l in a 2000 I have for parts, so I guess if I wreck my block pinning the sleeves I just throw in the old one and carry on.

Old thread I know.

But the Bosch ECUs are the same, you set the engine displacement with the test book.
