Erik was a massive help to me a couple of days ago for engine bearings (he translated the gobbledygook the engine shop told me and 2 day'd the parts). Engine bill arrives this week... AND THE NEW/reman ENGINE YAY!

What you must want to think, future wise is, what you intend to do with the Disco. Is this an overlanding, camping, daily driver rig, or are you planning on going full overlanding or rock crawling rig? Do you have another daily driver?

When I initially setup my Disco I wanted stock as much as possible but also be able to do overlanding and mild to hard trail. I have had to replace parts that broke off (front and rear OEM) bumpers and get the necessary upgrades to make it trail worthy.

Now I am in a part of my life that I want to do harder trails (Rubicon, Rausch Creek) etc. Harder trails that my Disco can certainly do but with a lot of help and bypass. I figured if I am going to do that trail the bypass is a shortcut out of the fun areas. So too fully enjoy it, I have got myself another vehicle that can get me there without using the bypass. For me its not the vehicle that makes the adventure, its how I get to point A to B and have as much fun as possible.

once again as mentioned above you need to decide what you are going to use it for.

you can spend $4k on lockers and compressors, gears, and all kind of crap like body armor, bumpers easily drop $6-8k on it, very easy to get sucked in on this site. as to what people think you need.

But if it is only going off road on occasion don't make the mistake of many others thinking you have to have all that crap to go off road.

get a CDL shifter and when you decide to climb mount Everest, you can buy that rock climbing crap. other wise its $6-8k wasted just so you can add it to your signature page.

Oh I know what I'm going to do with it.

It is my daily driver and must maintain its road manners. I paid it off in 2003, it has no rust, the interior is good, and I just spent big bucks Re doing a larger engine and transmission. It is a keeper. I am 48 years old and pretty tight with money because I am looking forward to early retirement, but I don't mind spending on my hobbies; the major limitation is that I like to do everything on the rover myself and I don't want to get in too deep.

I sold some property a few years ago and have gotten the bug to buy some more for hunting and recreational use. Everything I am looking at is on a logging road somewhere (cheap acreage) near national parks. I'm fine with going in groups but I need for the rover to get me there and back alone if necessary. Hence a desire to slightly overbuild.

So a locking CDL is a must. I have the hardware and need the linkage. I'd like to be able to pull one of my trailers with some stuff in it. I have a raised utility trailer (tandem axle) but the more likely candidate is an M101 trailer I have had awhile. It is heavy empty, but it has a pintle hitch, is indestructible, and carries a lot.

Hey I resemble that and it is not just to add to my signature page either... Many have asked me what I did to my LR and this is why I do this like it or not. I enjoy seeing what capabilities my D2 has pure and simple. No you don't have to have all that CRAP either to go offroad. But if you want your D2 to be the best it can be offroad, rock crawling whatever your choice, with the least chance of getting stuck or worse then you have to spend $. I do agree with you Drowsapp - agree buy a CDL and start there ... Charlie this will bet you the biggest bang for the buck for your needs.

I went through a phase with ATV's and I can probably winch myself out of anything. If I destroy my Land Rover I will be SAD but I can still get to work.

SO what I am hearing is, try the CDL (I can already activate it with a 10mm wrench) in a group and if that's not enough with the winch and lift and yada yada that I already have, then go big or go home.

AND what I am also hearing that the 4.11 gears are a good choice (unspoken, but also because I will be towing a trailer).... The gears aren't really expensive in the grand scheme of things anyway. I have enjoyed loafing along at low RPM's on the highway for a couple of years or more, but the downshifts put my teeth on edge.

I've replaced axles and CV's and ball joints on the trail on ATVs many times, so I guess as long as I have a spare this and that and my tools I should be able to muddle through. Unfortunately, a messed up ball joint on a LR is a little harder to replace and baling wire and kicking the tire straight to get home probably aren't an option; and I hate nothing more than the tow of shame. HAHA

Alright. Sounds reasonable and cheap! Yay! Now I have to figure out a CDL switch. I hate reaching up there. I'll Google. Thanks fellas! Sometimes it helps to just talk it out.
