Default 4.6 and 4.0 front timing cover interchangeability

Perhaps I've been searching the wrong terms but so far all I can find is the oil pump gears are interchangeable.

I'm starting a build on a disco 2 and have purchased a good 01 body/frame to begin. It has running motor but over heats and runs like crud. This rig is going to be a diesel build so I have to pull the motor. Has 120k

Have another 03 parts rig with 80k 4.6, a donor rig.

The little lady has a pretty beat up and raggedly run 99 disco 2 with 250k and counting using as a daily driver she isn't going to park for more than a day unless Christ himself makes a second appearance.

The plan is to take the 4.6 and 4.0 and make one good motor. Will likely use the 4.6 ECU for mo powa along with the 4.6 motor if the rear down looks good.

The heads and accessories all interchange but the front timing cover does not have a compatible part number. Will these parts interchange or will I need to use the 4.0 specific front cover on the 4.0 and 4.6 on 4.6

Her motor needs a tear down and reseal to address front and rear oil leaks. I'd like to have her a good running drop in to toss in over a weekend and as well as an being"upgrade" lower mile motor. She needs to get another 2 years out of this 99 so I have time to complete her diesel build.

Thanks ahead of time.

I'm also finding that the part numbers are different between the 4.0 and 4.6, though I could not find what their differences are. And there was no indication I could find that one superseded another. Unless someone here has intimate knowledge on the differences, probably best to keep to the specific front cover for the given displacement.

Thank you. It's weird when oem manufacturers put different part numbers in interchangeable parts. I will examine each housings and use the best looking one. Sadly the new parts rover shows an oil pressure light. The parts low mile rover I was told jumped time so who knows. It appears the pfft pfft pfft noise i hear when the engine is under load is a head gasket. The woes of a daily driver disco. I get to remove a head this week. I'm very glad I put on arp head studs last December.

Likely blew as the head started pouring coolant like a water fall last xmas eve. Was a slow leak for months before. Had the studs and gasket set on hand already. I "trued" up the heads as well as possible on a concrete block to get it going with what little spare time I had on Xmas day. Wasn't my best work but got her back on the road in sub 24 hours. The head will be sent to a proper machine shop this time so long as the block deck looks good.

'03 & '04 front cover usually misses parts for the relief valve of the oil cooler line. This prevents flow through the oil cooler, if connected.

I never tried to start the 03. I was told it had jumped time. I stole the fuel tank and other parts making it impossible to start at this point in the rig. I hope to find it's a low mile block that's in good shape. The stupid sai studs are in there tight and I need to get them out of the way

I think it’s fairly unusual for a Rover V8 to jump timing. Can you turn over the engine by hand?

I have not tired. Will be removing the head this week and eventually get the motor out for examination.

h haven't had a chance to spin the motor over. Driver's head is going to the machine shop in the AM. I don't see anything too bad so far. Will play with if more later this winter. Main goal now is getting the daily driver back on the road today.
