Default 4.6 front cover on 4.0

Hello,

I'm about to start rebuilding my old 4.0. I have a 03 4.6 front cover that I'd like to use. I can't find any definitive answer as to whether these are interchangeable. The only thing that someone wrote is that 4.6 is missing parts for the oil cooler bypass, though after taking them apart as much as I can, it seems that the 4.6 has all the same guts - at least as far as I can see. Can anyone advise?

Thank you

I asked this a year or so ago and never got an answer. Unfortunately my only 4.6 cover was destroyed by a thrown timing chain.

My spare 4.0 cover fit on the 4.6 block without issue leading me to believe there would be no issue there however I never ran it, I instead put the 4.6 internals into a 4.0 block.

It appears the only difference is the relief for the oil cooler.

I could swap the internals, but as much as I try I can't get the recessed caps that block the, let's call it "tubes" out of the casting.

In all honesty, I'd run the oil cooler if I had all the parts. Otherwise I'd forget the cooler. The only way I see the cooler being an advantage to these engine is if you spend tons of time at idle all summer with the AC blasting (construction company foreman) or tow heavy.
