Default 4.6 internals in a 4.0 block

as I’m thinking of doing my head gaskets I’m debating building a better motor. I’ve read a little on the net about the interchangeability of the cranks, rods and pistons. Does anyone have any firsthand experience with this combo? I’m not going big dollars here, just used parts and a few new ones. I’m interested in an ls swap when they’re ready but might play with this first

The difference between the 4.0 and 4.6 I believe is the crankshaft and stroke. So it should be doable, but for the cost of a new 4.6 crankshaft, you may be better off just buying a 4.6 out of a Range Rover P38.

I could be wrong though.

The Pistons are also different, but only slightly. A 4.6 crank and rods with a 4.0 block and Pistons would be a nice little set up. They're just a hair taller and therefore give you just a little extra compression, but not enough to cause issues. This is my mid-long term plan for the girlfriend's Disco.... If it doesn't get an LS swap first.

Yeah I’m really wanting to do an ls swap but I’m trying to wait for ace engineer to finish his kits. For now I might do the 4.6 route. Just regasket, timing chain/ oil pump. MAy be a cam. Depending on cost.
Need to find a 4.6 first. I have a couple spare 4.0 but they’re non sai

So I could use the 4.6 pistons? Which increase the compression ratio?

Call Turner Engineering or RPi Engineering and ask them for cost and viability. They both sell all the parts you would need.

I would think it would be as expensive as a used 4.6, but I could be wrong.

The 4.0 Pistons would increase the compression with a 4.6 crank and rods.

Honestly though, if you've got two good 4.0s just stick with what you've got. Shouldn't be too much longer till those kits are available.
