4 High / 4 Low
The other day I took my '01 disco II (130,000 miles) for a little joy ride. Took it through some mud and got her a little dirty. Had a blast. I decided to put it in 4 low for one tricky spot. Shifted the truck to neutral. put it in 4 low... it went fine. After I got back on the pavement I put the truck back in neutral to put it back in 4 neutral. When I tried to get moving drive wouldnt engage. I got the transmission light on my dash(what I think is the transmission light, its green with what looks like gears.) So I went back to neutral put it in 4H and everything was smooth. Haven't been able to get drive to engage without it being in 4H or 4L ever since. Any thoughts?
On a side note... is it bad to drive in 4H all the time?

as stated - obviously its not going anywhere with the transfer case in neutral.
heh.
yea the gears symbol means the transfer case is not locked in gear, the lever might be forward or back and FEEL like its in place for high or lo, but it didnt engage fully and lock into place. try rolling the car back and fourth a few inches or have someone push the car and try to get snapping into hi or lo FULL until you get solid feel and the gear like goes off... then shift tranny in gear and go! sometimes its tricky, its not nearly as smooth as shifting gears on a transmission, especilly if the connections are dirty (or maybe broken!)

Um, yes...4 Neutral will get you nowhere fast unless it's completely downhill. As mentioned previously, your Disco is 4wd, all of the time. The shifter closest to the front has 3 positions: low, neutral, and high. When in neutral, the engine is completely disconnected from the axles, almost like the transmission were in neutral. Use 4H for everyday driving, and 4L when needed.
I highly recommend reading the owners manual to learn about the vehicle. If you don't have the manual, one can be found in the RAVE (which also offers factory repair procedures) at landroversource.com.
