Default 8mm 12pt deep socket and 5/8 spark plug socket

I'm starting to believe an 8mm 12pt. deep socket (any drive size) doesn't even exist. I'd like to tighten the valve cover a little (not bad leaks, but part of my checkup.)

I went to two Sears in my area and the smallest they had, at both locations, was 12mm. I went online to Craftsmen.com and they a 6pt. 8mm deep socket.

Will a 5/16in 12pt deep socket work? (According to Google, 8mm = 0.31496063" so if I multiply by 16 I get 5.03937008 = approx 5/16")

Also, in anticipation of receiving my Bosch +4s in the mail today or next week, I want to make sure I have the right spark plug socket for it. I have an old 5/8" spark plug socket. Will it fit the Bosch plat +4s?

I have tried to find the 8mm 12 point at Sears on several occasions, never have it. I went to Sears online, had it for a couple of bucks, ordered it, next day order cancelled by Sears. I found one at a local specialty machine shop, it was about $3. You should also be able to find one from your local Snap-on or other pro tool dealer. I got a 3/8 size from sears, it was a little too big to fit completely and I was never able to get it on some of the tougher to get to bolts. Ever since I got the 1/4 inch socket, no valve cover leaks whatsoever, now it has started to leak from the front of the head/block seam....go figure. Phil

Great! 5/16 it is then.

Now, I just have to see if my 5/8 spark plug socket fits onto the Bosch Platinum +4s when they arrive.

Thanks!

I had the same issue. I bought mine at Advanced Auto. It's an 8mm wrench but the opposite site was the 12 sided I needed. It's not as convenient as a stand alone socket, but it worked. Autocraft Brand, Part # AC378.

Hope this helps.

I just buy my stuff from the snap on or mac guy when they come thru.

I don't mind spending the money if it does the job.

Hmmm... they had the shallow socket. After looking at the bolts and location today I guess people like the deep socket for its extra reach.

I also find it interesting that it's listed on Sears' site and made by GearWrench, yet their very own Craftsman site doesn't have a deep socket with those specs.

Oh well. Today I picked up the following:

To tighten valve cover bolts-

To replace spark plugs-
FYI - when you go into Sears (store and online) they have a new line of tools under the Craftsman umbrella called "Evolv" that look like they're squarely aimed at home/DIY-ers. They do *not* have the same "Forever Warranty" as Craftsman (in contrast they have a "Limited Warranty") and will not be as easily exchanged as Craftsman should they break or not perform to spec.

With that said, I had all of these tools when I owned my '84 Honda CRX, but had since only stuck to new cars. Man, I miss toolin' around under the hood.

Also, what happened to Sears? They used to have the Craftsman tools out in the open and it was easy to get what you needed. Now they have all the sockets, ratchets, and wrenches behind glass display cases and you have to wait to be helped to get what you need. It's a real PITA! Order online if you can wait.

Evolve is overpriced chinese made ****, just buy HF instead as they have a lifetime warranty. As you have noticed Sears is a sinking ship. Expect them to spin off the Craftsman name soon. When I need something today and have to go to sears I go up to the counter and and for a person with a key not that big of a deal.

I now buy better tools like williams, wright, proto, snap on etc. from ebay and get much better tools than craftsman for less money. Craftsman has gone down in quality big time. Look at their ratchets, they are full of plastic. I think the Harbor Freight red handled swivel head ratchets are much better then cman ratchets.
