Default 95 Discovery randomly won't start (once a week usually)

Greeting from Hawaii,

I have an 95 disco that decides at the most opportune times to not start. Generally if I swear a lot and leave it alone for about an hour it will usually start up, but it seems to be getting worse and today it wouldn't budge for the whole day. The symptoms are this.

  • turns over no problem
  • i smell gas after a while
  • i can hear the fuel pump turning on
  • once started never stalls or runs rough
  • engine runs very smooth
  • only has happened once a week or so
  • research has told me i own a V8i multi-port fuel injection model
  • 145,000 miles
  • i've been told to look for a crankshaft position sensor or camshaft sensor, but i'm pretty sure i don't have those on this model
  • lots of sensors, O2, fuel temp, coolant temp, air intake, has an ECM, vehicle speed sensor, fuel cut-off switch, speed sensor for fuel mixture.
  • when it finally didn't start all day i disconnected the battery-nope
  • pulled the ignition fuse-started-coincidence? i don't know.
Anybody out there that can give a place to start would be greatly appreciated. Also, i'm no mechanic, but have done the belt, water pump, thermostat, alternator and various other nicknacks to the truck, so unless i can't get to it or have to lift the engine i'll give it a go.

Finally, i found that diagnostic box under my passenger seat, but i don't understand how you would hook it up or plug it into anything.

Thanks for your time

Jason

A good place to began is to have the static fuel pressure checked, in other words your fuel rail may be be holding pressure.
