Won't start, starter just clicks once!
Hello all!
I have a 2000 disco with 134,000 miles that won't start. It started just fine this morning, no problems at all... I drove it to a friends house, tried to start it back up after about 10 minutes being off...just a single click keeps coming from the starter. The lights seem to all come on strong, and nothing changed after a jump (battery to battery) This is the first time this has happened...I've read similar posts and figure I'll try the battery first, then the selonoid and starter. Any other advice?
Thanks!
Mike

I used to get this on an old mini occasionally. The problem there was the pinion in the starter 'sticking' to the flywheel. I could fix it by rocking the car forwards and backwards with the transmission in top gear a few times, then trying to restart it. That was a manual transmission though and I doubt you'd get the same result with an auto box... if it's even the same problem.
How loud is the click? Is it in the dash or from the starter itself? If it's from the starter it may well be a stuck pinion - give it a wallop with a plastic mallet (not too hard obviously[8D] ) if it's in the dash is it a relay?

Thanks for the advice all! After trying everything from rocking it in-gear to replacing the battery, I had it towed to the dealership where they told me it was a bad starter....and it would be $975 to fix. I just ordered a used "low mileage" starter for $95. Now my question is, how hard of a project is this? I'm no mechanic, but I am pretty savvy and have done basic repairs and replacements. Thanks in advance!
