96 D1 Question...General
Ok, I owned a 2k D2 and regret ever getting rid of it. Aside from having to drain the rear diff of water every 6mos it was a workhorse...Now I'm looking at a '96 D1, 136k, tranny serviced, cooling system serviced. New serp belt, cooling hoses, plug wires, plugs and shocks and he's asking 2650 but said make him an offer. He was also a mechanic but don't think on LR's, although he works at an LR shop in town. Now for the bad's which don't see too awful.
Needs:
2nd bank o2 sensor, throwing a code and running rich, won't pass inspection
clutch fan
passenger side window motor
new window control unit on center console
The rest is cosmetic, headliner, both front seats need reupholstered.
I'm not the best at working on LR's, how hard is it to change out the o2 sensor, I can see it so can't be that hard right? My question is, beside needing the top end done as do all disco's, what should I be wary of? If I can pick this thing up for 1500, is it worth it? It does run. Thanks in advance for any/all help.

Mine has the original head gaskets. (193k)
If the rear windows do not work then it is a broken solder joint on the window lift ECU, easy 15 min DIY with a soldering pen.
The power window motors almost never go bad it is the roller on the window regulator that goes bad 98% of the time.
It is a plastic wheel and it breaks.
For $1500 hell yeah.

I have a 97 I bought a few years ago for around 6K with 100K miles on it. I feel if yoyu can get a decent 96 for 1500 that would be a very good buy.
If he won't come down much tell him to take care of the issues....
Either way, not a bad deal.
As far as checking stuff out, I would see if the CDL with still engage. Usually the shifter linkages corrode and freeze up if not used reguarly. You have to tear out the center console to get to everything. If can fixed relatively cheaply but is a PIA to get to everything.
Also look under the rear carpets and pads for the conditiopn of the floorboards. Have the dealership run the VIN and see if fuel tank was replaced or not.
I would also lift the front carpets and look at those floorboards. Take a look at my photo albums if you want to see some detailed pics of some of the things I have dealt with. Mostly corrosion related.
So far mine has done pretty good. I would like to buy another one in that $1500 price range myself. Good Luck with yours.

It's a Cali/AZ Rover so not too worried about rust. What's up with the fuel tank? Rust? There was just something hinkey about this guy, sort of jr. mechanic when it came to Rovers. If it were a toy for me then I wouldn't be too worried. It's going to be a daily driver though and not too sure I want to take the chance on it. I asked questions that he couldn't answer mechanically, sort of like he had someone write the for sale post for him. Grrrr, LR for 1500 and I'm going to have to decline for now. Thanks for answering all. If you'd like his info, please let me know and I'll forward it on.
walk away. A tech that knows LR that can't fix a discovery and doesn't want to fix a simple oxygen sensor problem is selling you short. I bet its got an issue with a misfire from a valve issue.
He is not telling you everything and its not right.
