Default 96 Disco 130K miles runs rough at 30 50 and 70 mph

I am the proud new owner of a 96 Discovery SE7. I picked it up for $1400 yesterday. It seems to run pretty strong and the transmission shifts smooth. It's not the prettiest thing but I am an excited new owner.

The only problems I see is that it wants to cut out/really start hesitating at the 50mph mark. Sometimes it also does it at 30 and 70. If I let off the throttle then reapply, it goes away and pulls through fine.

The check engine light is on as well as the ABS light.

Any suggestions?

get the check engine light codes read for free at a local auto parts store. bring the 4 digit codes back to us. don't listen to anything the auto parts store employee says we need the numbers not his mumbo jumbo.

Dont worry about the ABS light.
Like Hilltopper said, we need the trouble codes.

Thanks fellas. I'll hopefully have a chance to swing by a shop to get the codes this weekend. I'll come back with the results.

I also plan to go ahead and change the oil and filters (oil, air, fuel) just because who knows when the last time that was done...

not a bad idea to do a full maitnenace of all fluids. brake fluid, coolant, power steering, diffs, transfer case, tranny.... oil, oil filter, fuel filter, air filter, clean the MAF... wires and plugs,.. clean the throttle body and throw a can of seafoam in the gas tank.

but in the meantime get the codes.

yep, I would do everything that hilltoppersx mentioned because like you said, who knows when the last time ANY of that stuff was changed! Just to be on the safe side, its like resetting the clock in a sense!

Congrats on your purchase and I hope you enjoy it, I know I am enjoying mine!

Regards,

OK. I got some codes for you... I really appreciate ya'lls willingness to help.

PO118
PO125
PO116
PO300
PO304
PO308
PO301
PO1314
PO1316

NINE codes...I think some are probably redundant but it's still a little scary to hear. I also picked up a can of sea foam. Should I run that through the gas tank or through the vacuum line or put it in the oil??

118 - Engine Coolant Temperature Circuit High Input
125 - Insufficient Coolant Temperature for Closed Loop Fuel Control
116 - Engine Coolant Temperature Circuit Range/Performance Problem
300 to 308 - Random/Multiple Cylinder Misfire Detected

I'm going to let someone else more familiar with these codes break the news because I don't like the conclusion I drew from them and am hoping I'm wrong.

And hold off on the Seafoam Treatment for the time being...

OK - You're really scaring me, Suede...

When I left the parts shop, I was thinking I may need to replace a coolant sensor and possibly the coils. I already plan to change the plugs and wires. I see here over and over that people recommend magnacor 8mm. I was wondering if Borg Warner 8mm would work...

I'm hoping someone "more familiar with these codes" can give me some good news though. :-)

are you losing coolant? if not then i would say coolant sensor. if you are losing coolant, slipped sleeve.

check your spark plug wires for damage as well. save the seafoam, you might need it for your new engine.
