Hello! My name is Britt (short for Britton) and my father recently gave me his old 1997 Land Rover Discovery. It's a five speed and i'm told its rare.

I took the car in after having a wreck in the front (thank goodness for the brush bar!) and i'm trying to sort out some new issues.

The rear regulator was replaced yesterday, rear window works great again!

Now I just have one issue: sometimes (IE ever since the thermostat was replaced) the temp will read high when driving until i turn the heat on....

coolant seems OK, i'm planning n checking it/topping it off today before I leave for work, I heard that Discos have a tendancy to have plugged radiators. I could get the radiator boiled out or the core replaced, but i'm checking the easy first.

 

First make sure you are using only DexCool for coolant.
How many miles on the truck?
You have air trapped in the engine causing at least part of your heat issue.
You might want to get in touch with me, I'll walk you thru bleeding the engine, the probably need to get it to a radiator shop ASAP for a flow test to see what's up with the radiator.
Don't drive it till you get these things checked or you will over heat the engine, drop a sleeve and then you will be looking for a replacement engine cause they don't take heat.

I wouldn't agree with the only using DexCool. Though a good quality, in-condition coolant is a must. I switched to Amsoil PropGlycol in a 70/30 mix today actually, looking for something that won't sludge (DexCool has had issues), and something non-toxic.

 

no issues today, someone also said to take the seperator off between the condensor and the radiator and clean out from the middle.

I dont know, everything seems to be OK.

Maybe it just needed a good bleeding?

I am goign to get ti flushed, just need to schedule it.

 

What would cause overheating only after driving around 30-40 minutes at highway speeds?

Should I take out bolts 11 and 14 on the heads so they lie flat, or should I attempt to replace the head gasket?

 

Lots of things could, most likely is vapour lock preventing proper coolant flow. Another could be bad pressure from the pump, you could try removing the bleed screw and running it and see if you get flow. Another could be corrosion, if the coolant/rad have sludged up you might not be getting optimal flow.

 

I guess the sludge idea again could be the root, I just thought it would overheat sooner, but it maybe something that only occurs on 90+ degree days, and not 70 degree days or for short trips.
