Default Are '98 Disco Series 1 Front and Rear Diffs Interchangeable?

Hi everyone. Hopefully someone can answer my question. I have been unable to find a thread with the answer.
I have a '98 Discovery auto Series 1. The diffs both have 4 bolt flanges.
Are the diffs interchangeable?
The rear diff whines like crazy and has had water in it. I am able to get a 4 bolt used front diff and I am wondering if I can bolt it straight into the rear axle housing.
Your input would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks.
Bob.

Yes you can use front/rear or even a series II front/rear. If it has a 3 bolt flange just swap the flanges. The flanges come right off. You will notice one is longer than the other....take a magnet and pull the spacer out from under the flange swap over and your all good. I can't remember right now but there are different length studs on the housings from series I to series II. I just put all longs in my front and rear housings. I changed so many diffs in my 95 DI and the 92LWB I can't remember what was what anymore. You can also use D-90 or classic diffs. Just dont use the real early classic diffs. They only have 11 spline axles. I keep using high milage diffs as repacements and they don't last to long. One day i'll get a locker and that will be over. For now I take what I can get!
