Default 99 DII transfer case ?'s

Ok, it has been asked several times and I'm sure y'all are tired of answering this. I am looking at buying a 99 Disco and don't understand the transfer case. Does it only run in all wheel drive full time? The shifter only moves from high to neutral to low, I understand this part, but where the heck is the "lock" for the center "diff?" I would like to run this thing in rear wheel drive on pavement and "locked" of road. I don't really want to be spinning the front drive train needlessly with these fuel prices, besides the wear and tear on the equipment. I imagine the front hubs would need replaced with unlockable ones, this possible?

As if this was not enough, I have more newbie questions about this rig. It is a 99 SE7 with 95k miles on it. The dealer is replacing the headgaskets, (not done yet and a known issue) the front and rear brake pads/rotors, and the driver seat will not work (they are fixin' this too.) Any other issues I should look into?

Thanks for all the advise, I will continue to comb the site for answers in other posts.

Your DIIis full-time 4 wheel drive. Doesn't matter what position the transfer case selector is in, its 4x4. The center differential can be locked by moving the selector to the lock position. This sends power equally to the front and rear axles increasing traction. When not locked the center differential acts just like the differential in the axles, allowing the front and rear drive shafts to rotate at different speeds.

Lock the center differential only when traction is very low, such as mud, deep sandor snow, and disengage as soon as you get back on normal pavement.

The only problem with what was just posted is that you will have to install an old t/case linkage from a D1 or a solenoid set up so that you can shift into 4High Lock or 4 Lo Lock.
As for the CDL. it will then transfer 50% of your engines power to the front and 50% to the rear, giving you a substancial amount of extra traction that you wouldn't have with out the CDL.
If you are still confused, send me your tele number and a good time for me to call you.
By the way, David, you can't drive with power only to the rear and you don't use hubs on a Disco.

Thanks guys! I have owned Toyota 4x4 pick-ups for many years and was wondering if it was possible to have the same rear wheel drive, part time 4 wheel drive with manual locking hubs. Looks like this is impossible, thanks for clearing that up. So I understand the Disco 2 will stay full time four wheel drive, and I need to install a Disco 1 linkage to fully lock the transfer case. I worked as a technician for Nissan and Infiniti for many years so the install won't bea problem, however, how much should I expect to pay for the linkage? Is the lever and linkage all I need? I am a "just push the manual lever into 4wd" kinda guy but it sounds like you guys prefer the solenoid/push buttonset up. Where do I look for one of these?

Thanks for the help!

What other issues should I be looking for before buying this rig?

Here is a good link for used Rover parts, they have the whole linkage assembly for $150.

Just to clarify. Normally, you are full time 4WD. When you lock the CDL, it locks the transfer case giving equal power to front and rear. As it is right now, power goes to the front and rear, but the T-case acts like a differential. It is still possible to be stuck with 1 wheel spinning. Locking the CDL makes it so you are stuck with 2 wheels spinning. One on each axle. To gain the most traction offroad, you have to install lockers (locking differentials) on the front and rear.

I don't know if you have traction control or not, but it works really well, and adding the CDL will just increase your drivability.

Mike, the part at roverlandparts.com states this part will"NOT" fit a D2. Are they just "disclosing" this incase someone does something stupid? It will really fit, right? I can already hear the wife when I order this. " What the hell are you doing, it says that won't fit your rig!"

Thanks for the help and patience, guys!
