99 disco 2 power steering issues!
Ok i have a 99 lr disco 2 130,000 miles been running great until yesterday. Out of the blue i started hearing a whining noise when i turn the wheel. I checked my p/s fluid and it was a little low.
When i got home i crawled underneath noticed that there was fluid leaking from the top of the rubber hose connected to the bottom of the pump. I Pulled it out, Cut the hose down, put it back on and same thing. I did notice when i pulled the pump i could hardley turn the pulley on the pump like it was seized.
SO i went today picked up a pump from a 03 disco that they said it was compatiable, it looked the exact same. i got it from a running motor at a salvage yard the rover was in wreck in the rear end..Put it in a min ago turn wheel noise finally GONE.
However i have little steering, Extremely hard to turn the wheel. I also notice not much movement in reservoir when the motor is running. Is there a certain way to bleed the system?

I tore this page 711 out of the 1529 page workshop manual just for you. If you like, you can download the whole shop manual, it is called the RAVE.
Follow instructions or you can easily damage the pump you just put in.

Do yourself a favor and instead of doing a bleed which is a messy job both for you and your drive way, do a 4 quart P/S flush. Doing this will remove a lot more junk from inside you steering systenmand there is no leak.
If you want help with this give me a shout.

Sounds good thanks everyone. Just took it to a shop today found that the power steering pump has a small leak right above the lower hose connection. It leaks with the truck off, I have read on a few lr forums to open the pump removing the four allen bolts, then clean and apply some rtv sealant let it cure inside for a full 24hrs
But my main question is since there is a small leak like this, will it affect the Steering Making it hard to turn? The leak and not bleeding it is the Issue?
If this don't work ill shell out for another pump. I have pretty much removed the reservoir emptied all the fluid and also from the lines. Fluid is all new now.

If there is a leak at the pump, it is a roll of the dice if you can reseal it. The fact that the steering is difficult tells me your pump has most likely gone south.
Did you replace it once, if so with a used one, rebuilt one or brand new pump?

Ok i opened pump i got from salvage yard, There was metal shavings and gunk all in the inside a piece was also broke.
I opend the one that was originally in the truck cleaned everything, put the Permatex ktv Black sealant on it last night letting it cure for 24hrs, put it in a min ago and BAM IT WORKS! NO LEAKS!
Started it up no more whine from it and have power steering finally!
thanks everyone for the help, lesson learned don't buy from salvage yard
