Default 99 disco 2 suddenly jumped into neutral and wont come out

I just recently got this fine vehicle and the guy who sold it to me said it jumped from high to low sporadically while driving, but that if you put it in low range it would drive like it should albeit in low range. Well i buy it with a good spare donor car with a good drivetrain in it so i can fix it, what ever it needs, but decided to drive it to confirm the problem. It drives great until about 80 miles over the course of the week.

Well last night as im driving it and suddenly i lose all power to the wheels, tried putting it in to low range to get it somewhere safer and it wont go. Eventually i was able to get it to go back in to high range and it moved for about 10 feet before all lost of power to the wheels again, like it was dropping in to neutral, then i would try several more times and get it to go in to low and was able to pull it in to a parking spot where its sat overnight. Whats could be causing it to not stay in gear? Im new to land rovers and have no idea where to start. If you guys could give me some guidance i would really appreciate it!

Could be cleaning lube and adjustment is needed on the shift linkage

Is there anywhere that such a procedure would be outlined? Do i need to pull the console or can i do it from underneath?

I’ve read all sorts of post on how to free up my shifter it’s stuck in hi and is fine for now but would like to be able to get to low if I need too. I just got a 2000 d2 automatic so everything is new. If I understand correctly I don’t have the option to lock the diff the way it is but can swap the selector to be able to lock it
