'99 Disco II Brake Pads
Gang - It's almost time for my front brakes to get new pads. I got quoted $600 (at the dealership, of course) yesterday for this job, and laughed in the girl's face. There's no way I'd pay that kind of ridiculous money.
Is this something we could do on our own? I do have a trustworthy independent shop, but brake pads seem like they are doable by us.
Any advice or stories on how to go about it?
Thanks.

RE: '99 Disco II Brake Pads
Normally --- the pads and rotors are changed out at the same time. This is because the brake rotors wear at the same time as the pads, with resulting grooves in the rotors. If you fit new pads to grooved rotors --- you GREATLY shorten the life of the new pads. The oldrotors are not "turned" or machined as in days of old. Check out this link for my price on a front brake kit for your Disco.

RE: '99 Disco II Brake Pads
The main reason is that the wear pattern cannot be removed without the rotor falling below the minimum thickness value. No machine shop will machine a rotor below this value unless they like lawsuits. And in some cases the rotor will have localized "hot spots" which also require more material to be removed to get "shudder-free" performance. The replacement rotors and padsI offer are good for 20-40K of usage ---depending on the driving habits of the owner.
