Default ? about diff lock

Ok, I just bought my 94' D1 and with the snow used my transfer case for the first time. Am Iright in understanding that it is in4 wheel all the time and the diff lock somehow locks the actual diff in the axles or am I missing something huge? If it does activate the axle diff then where do I look for malfunction of engagement. I know it may sound like a dumb question to some but I am new and cooming from a Jeep background, any help is appreciated.

the diff lock gives more torqe when its engaged and locks the wheels into rotating at the same time.

Specifically it aloows the front and rear drive shafts to rotate at the same time which allows the truck to have better traction.
