Default AC Compressor noise - Advice please

Hi all,

Just bought a Disco II and it is great condition, but there is a noise coming out of the AC compressor. The noise varies when pushing on the gas or idle. Sounds like power steering on low fluid...

Does anyone have an idea what this could be? Bad compressor? Low on gas? The AC blows cold but not really cold. Any help is appreciated!

Thanks!

First check the power steering fluid level.

Does the fluid make the compressor cause that noise?

No he is maybe thinking you are mistaken about where the noise is coming from since the a/c compressor and the power steering pump are close together I think.

How did you pinpoint that the noise is coming from your a/c compressor?

you're going to laugh at this. first i listened around and it seemed to be coming from the compressor. i then used a mag light and touched it with one end and listened on the other end, like a stethoscope

of course the noise propagates through the engine, etc. but the highest pitch came from the compressor.

i hope you understand what i'm trying to explain :0

That is one way to make a stethoscope, another way is a piece of rubber tubing.

If you turn the a/c off does it still make the noise?

yes, still makes the noise. increases when pushing on the gas and it is lower at idle...

Just took it out for a drive and looked again at the compressor and that is defenitely where the noise is coming from. Also checked the power steering fluid level and it is normal...

Exactly what kind of noise is it making? "Sounds like power steering on low fluid..." could be taken many different ways. Is it a low moan, a chirp, a squeal?
