Default AC and Turn Signal Issue

I have made it through the first month with my new2000 D2 and just love it (now starting to use the term fuel consumption instead of fuel economy).
Have done most of the basic maintenance needed but have found two issues.

1) AC does not work. The past owner had the heater core changed in February. Could this be related to the AC not working? Any common AC problems? Would a simple recharge help? I can hear the system turning on - but no cold air.
2) When I push the turn signal lever it does not always work, until I start to turn the steering wheel. Could this be an electrical problem in the steering column?

So far I have learned a lot from you guys – Thanks!

Do you have your owners manual, there should be a self test dscribed in there to see what is going on with your a/c. If you don't have it get back to me.
As for the turn signal, are you sying your turn signal won't lock when you want to turn and then unlock?

I have an owners manual - I will do the self test first and see what happens.

The turn signal locks but the lights don't come on unless the steering wheel is moved.
I just need to give the wheel a couple of degrees of movement - and on they come.
This does not alway happen, it is intermitant. My guess is a contact issue?

Sounds like the switch is failing.
