It's a great shame to see your truck so badly damaged after all the hard work. I hope you get it 'wheelin' again soon.

Does your truck have a CDL? Probably would have made a huge difference in your level of control on those surfaces.

I'm curious about the CDL as well. Mine has it, but no linkage to operate it. Wondering how brave I should get on trails without it, before I manage to get a linkage installed for it...

Just choose to stop and turn around (assuming you can) if it gets iffy, low range,traction control, the correct tires for your terrain and air pressure will go along ways. The Center lock just helps.

But mud is always tricky - it can be worse than ice for slipping. Then grab and hold your truck solid.

Mine does not have CDL in my 03 but it worked fine in deep mud and climbing slippery logs. I was amazed how they worked. I am guessing without much experience that having a CDL will be better. I got stuck twice not because the TC did not work but first, because of the rock and mud, I ended up sliding sideways towards a tree on my side and a tree right infront of me where there is no way to maneuver anymore. 2nd time I slid sideways and ended up between a fallen tree and a tree right behind me which damaged my rear bumper.

Correct/perfect tire is the difficult part...

Listened to my mud terrain tires sing all the way up north last weekend (250 miles). Luckily, l'm about deaf...so it wasn't that bad...and they actually drown out any rack noise. But, when we got into deep loose sugar sand...the mudder were definitely not good. Especially, while climbing any type of incline. They keep digging for gold, deeper and deeper. Yes, we were loaded for bear and the rover was quite heavy this trip...so that surely didn't help. Plus, l didn't air down (just because laziness and didn't really plan on anything crazy). But, they are still not the right tire for sand...way to aggressive. I guess All Terrain tires do about everything okay to a degree...whereas...my M/T tires do mud great...but are just okay at everything else or less. Hate them in the snow and ice, my wife's rover with A/T tires is much safer and controllable.

Anyhow...my kingdom for the perfect tire...lol.

Right there with you drove my wife nuts looking for the "ideal" tire when I had my Pathfinder. Settled on the Copper Discover ST Maxx AT, generally here on the West Coast it is hard pack gravel and rocks - wet a lot, but little mud or sand.

Still run the same on the Disco, so far they have worked well. But I would not want to get into serious mud with them.
