I mounted my camera on the underside of the high-level brake light. It's inside the glass so I had to cover the LEDs because there was too much glare to see anything, but otherwise it seems to be an ideal mount point. Run the wires through the existing grommets and sleeves.

Crutchfield says that the 3500NEX is too deep for my 2001 D2. Does yours stick out a bit? (claims 6.985" deep vs 6.665" on the original, which really is only 1/3" so maybe it doesn't matter?)

Never tried the tunnel but whichever way you go I would make sure your camera wire is long enough or purchase a camera wire extension before you start pulling trim pieces.
I ran mine along the interior of the US passenger side of the vehicle. Open the rear door and at the passenger-side rear of the vehicle, remove the plastic vent and There is a grommet (unused?) which I poked my wiring through and then sealed with RTV. Then I tucked the wiring under the cargo bin trim and under the carpet of the rear seat area. Then I removed the front/rear kick plates, run wiring in that channel, remove trim in the passenger footwell and fish the wire to your head unit.
