Default Air pump and cooling fan

Greetings wise ones -

I have failed the safety and emissions testing for the second time. I replaced my brakes but failed on the "sec air pump" - I have no idea what this is. The technician stated it was something that helps with the emissions when the engine is started cold.

I notice that when I start my Disco in the morning there is a fairly loud whirring noise that stops after about a minute - is this what they are talking about?

The shop quoted me $478 plus labor - I can't find the part on rockauto.com.

I need some help. What is the story on the "sec. air pump"?

Secondary air pump - normally runs at cold start, then from time while running sometimes as a functional test. Sounds like a hair dryer when failng, passenger side of engine. Reduces pollution

Get the actual fault code numbers and get them to us so we can help you with this.
You can also buy used parts for a lot less money but need to know which ones are bad.

If you hear the whirring, then the pump is turning.
The pump is on the passenger's side on the firewall.
Looks like a fan motor.

Off of it is a black air hose which is about an inch thick.
That air hose goes to a pipe which is behind the engine and pinned against the firewall.

Make sure that the air hose is attached and not a break in that hose.

All that pump is - is really a little shop vac which is running when the engine is first turned on.
It injects air into the heads eventually.
