Are all Brakes places complete liars???
Have a 2000 Disco II. Brakes have always felt a little spongy but not too spongy. Took it to dealer in the past and said brakes are fine, Discoverys just ride that way because of the power assist. Took it in last month (not to the dealer) and they said the rears pads were worn and the rotors are barely within spec. Decided to get a second opinion somewhere else and they told me all the pads/rotors were fine, but the master brake cylinder needs replacing.
What the ****????
Can anyone help??
Many thanks!

You'll pay more at the dealer, but their expertise and access to correct parts is worth it in my opinion. I took a '97 disco to a Les Schwab (a ver large west coat tire/brake chain) and they totally messed up the job. Had to go back 5 times to get the noises coming from the brakes to cease, then they burned up after 4000 miles. Got my money back and went to the dealer. Learning to do one's own brakes would be a good investment, that and family dentistry.

I got mine from Atlantic British (www.roverparts.com) as part of a kit. Kit for the Disco I is item # 9985EBC. It includes all the hub oil seals, axle seals and brake hardware. I was just on their website, and it is $449.95 right now.
I got mine for about $400 for the kit last fall. At the time, the genuine rotors were $130 each, the lockhead brake pads were $70 a set, and all the extra hardware was about $40. The total for genuine parts was about $700.
If you do the brake job, don't forget to repack the bearings. Or better yet, go to NAPA and get new ones for about $17/ea. You will need eight, and I think the part number is BR37 on the Disco I. It includes the races.
Good luck.

ok.. one thing about rover brakes... all of them fell a litlle spongy, but dont let anyone tell you that rover rotors can be turned cause they usually cant one quick way to check your brakes/rotors is to see if there is a lip on the edge of the rotor if it is big or noticable i recomend changing pads and rotors...

i go along with mike. get under and check them yourself. the parts are available. there is parts supplier list on the site. I use atlantic british. I am not one to turn rotors. I turn them into trash and get new ones. I get about 40k out of each set. If you don't have the service manual, i recommend getting one. it has saved me alot. If you are into the mods you can do check the mod section, you may find something of interest. hope it helps. gotta love a rover. duboff
