Default Alternative Oil filter

Our trucks use the Ford FL1A filters, I just found that Ford has a Racing version of this filter.

This is the filter, note how it has silicone instead of rubber like the regular filter, also note how it has twice the thread count to retain the filter to the housing.

It's also twice as heavy, coming it at 16 ounces, while the standard filter is 8 ounces.

From the Ford Racing site:

+ Synthetic-Polymer/Cellulose-Fiber blend media
+ Heavy-guage base and canister for higher burst strength and impulse fatigue resistance
+ High-quality silicone anti-drain back valve
+ Non-stick sealing gasket for ease of installation and removal
+ Long life with standard and synthetic motor oils
+ Up to 50% more filtering capacity than standard filters
+ Improved filtering efficiency

And a data sheet from a bobistheoilguy thread (for the fl820s, but the FL1A should be comparable)

Anyway, I'm adding the stock oil cooler to my D2 today, and I'll use this filter.

That looks like a great filter, but I'm of the "why put an awesome filter on such a crappy engine" camp. I can see why trying to get the best oil filter sounds appealing, but it seems like the failures these engines experience are not caused by oil filter problems. I buy Wix 51515 filters for around $5 and save my money for parts and the inevitable frame repair.

Puralator L40316. Twice the capacity, 97.5% efficiency and around $10.

I stick with the wix or napa gold filter (same thing). It does the job and this motor doesn't require anything fancy.
