I started to dig into my front cover to do the oil pump and when trying to get the negative cable off the alternator it broke. Any way to fix it or am I hosed?
I think it’s a positive cable as the negative will be a case ground. Maybe someone here knows a fix but I think you’ll be needing a replacement alternator.
It can be fixed for around $100 and you'll have to remove the alternator, fix it, then replace it. There isn't a safe way to fix your existing one.
Or, you could just buy a new higher performance alternator, which is what I'd suggest, since it's actually less work, and rebuilt one (if money is an issue) is only about 50% more cost than. you trying to fix your existing one, and it is less time consuming.
My original alternator literally failed because the same piece broke connection while driving, so yours may have already been damaged.
You can buy a used alternator off eBay for ~$80. Or you can buy a newer one for $180. I ended up going with the latter.
